The 14th Annual Great Nebraska Gold Rush
Carnival for 2005 was held this year on Sunday June 12th at The Nebraska
Humane Society on the grounds next to Bone Jour Doggie
Day Care. Despite the ever present rain clouds, the day
stayed dry and a great crowd showed up for a wonderful day
of fun. GRRIN volunteers began their day at 8:00am setting up
tents, tables, signs and games. By Noon the grounds were transformed
into a Golden playground with games such as Pin the Tail on the
Cat, Wet T-shirt relay races, the cake walk, and the shoe pile game.
Each canine winner got a treat and their human companions won tokens
to turn in for prizes (that of course, went to their Golden!).
The Grooming table
was out in force again working double-time to keep
up with the toe nail and ear trimming. Every year, it’s by far
the most popular attraction at the Carnival and they worked their
“tails” off again making the Golden’s shine. While waiting their
turn at the grooming tables, many visited the GRRIN information
booth and the Foster Home Booth to learn more about how to become
a GRRIN foster home. A behavior booth led by Gary Platt gave out
valuable information on behavior and training and Melissa Hoover
of Nature Dog Boutique offered advice on quality pet food options.
Back by popular demand
was Madam Bowowski who made a return appearance this
year to read paws. New this year was the Duck Hunt game where
a Golden tested out his fetching ability to see if he could
dunk for a rubber duck out of one pool and drop it into
another pool. Most of our participants decided it was more fun
just to take a swim. Also new this year was the Dog Trick Booth
lead by Dana Fedman, certified pet dog trainer of Des Moines. Golden’s
and their humans learned how to do fun tricks such as roll over,
shake, take a bow and the weave between the legs maneuver.
Dr. Suzanne Ostle
headed up the microchip clinic this year where several
Golden’s were implanted with a permanent ID chip.
The GRRIN boutique
had many new items this year and a raffle was drawn
with three winners. Beth Walsh of Omaha won a CD player, Cathy
Miller of Lincoln won the gift basket and Dave Nielsen of Omaha
won the gift certificate for one month of free service from Kris’s
Canine Klean-Up.
The highlight of
the day was the Rescue Dog Parade MC’d by GRRIN Adoption
Coordinator Julie White. A stream of GR’s and their owners
beamed with pride as they marched their way through the parade
line showing off each other with smiles from ear to ear.
The parade shows the end result of the dedication from all the
GRRIN volunteers and foster families who work so hard to give
each Golden his new start.
Thank you to all
the volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the 2005Great
Nebraska Gold Rush a Golden success and we look forward
to seeing you in 2006!
